What You Missed at Apple’s 2014 WWDC
Apple’s 2014 World Wide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) was held last week in San Francisco. Apple announced its iOS 8 update, which has some exciting new features for Apple users. In case you missed it, here are a few highlights from the conference:
Re-vamped keyboard.
After years of complaints from consumers, Apple has finally upgraded its keyboard. The keyboard will include a new word prediction feature called QuickType, which will customize the iOS users’ word suggestions based on their use of language. It will also be able to suggest words based on who the user is messaging and what app they’re using. In addition to QuickType, iOS 8 will support third-party keyboards, similar to what Android offers to its users.
Family Sharing.
Apple introduced Family Sharing, a feature which allows up to six members of the same family to access content purchased from a single credit card. Additionally, this feature allows family members to share contacts, calendars and even locate each other’s devices in case they are lost or stolen. Parents will also be able to set credit card limits on their kids’ iTunes accounts.
HealthKit.
One of the most exciting announcements is the introduction of the HealthKit app. This app will allow iOS users to have an electronic copy of their health records; a feature some doctors think can be revolutionary. Jae Won Joh, an Emergency Room doctor in training, said that HealthKit has “tremendous potential”. Instead of going through tedious and time consuming processes to obtain patient information, the patient can provide their information to their doctor through HealthKit. Joh expressed that HealthKit will also be a huge help in the case of an emergency where the patient is unconscious and can’t give doctors crucial health information. The app will be TouchID protected, to ensure privacy. Apple is currently working with the FDA to make sure all necessary precautions and regulations are adhered to.
