Detroit
Detroit is the most populous city in Michigan with a 2012 population of 701,475. It's known as the founding place of Motown music and has been home to famous people including Eminem, Diana Ross, Tom Selleck and Iggy Pop. Detroit is the second largest theater district in the U.S. with 18 professional theaters. It also has the world's largest outdoor museum, Greenfield Village, the largest open-air wholesale/retail market in the U.S., Eastern Market and the country's largest island park within a city- Belle Else Park. Detroit has previously been named the potato chip capital of the world due to their mass consumption.
In the 1800s, Detroit became a major shipping and manufacturing center and still remains that way today. It was the birthplace of the automobile and the home to General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. Detroit remains the core of the automobile industry, despite competition from abroad. It's also one of the largest manufacturing cities in the U.S., being the leader in steel, fabricated-metal, paper products, chemicals, food and beverages.
