Global Warming Threats Call for New Technology
The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report summarizing the damaging effects of global warming, emphasizing rising sea levels and threats to health, water resources and species. Because of these reactions to climate change, the world will be more reliant on technology, specifically Internet of Things-type (IoT) networks to monitor the earth’s infrastructure, movement and environment. With this technology, governments can administer warnings efficiently to minimize damage cause by global warming related disasters.
Health is a major concern, especially with temperature change. Changes in the frequency of heat waves and droughts impact well-being, as well as natural systems. Changes in natural systems impact disease vectors, water-borne diseases and air pollution which lead to physical and mental strain.
Air travel will especially be affected by climate change, as air turbulence is expected to increase. A clear warning that “clear-air turbulence will increase the Atlantic corridor leading to longer and bumpier trips” is listed in the report.
In coastal regions, storms are predicted to occur more frequently and therefore increase the amount of weather delays and cancellations, according to the IPCC report.
Scott Tiazkun, an analyst at International Data Corporation (IDC), a company which specializes in market research, believes that more IoT systems for water usage, energy conservation and public infrastructure and roadway monitoring will help everyday living “through better resource efficiency”.
As climate change from global warming continues to develop and affect the earth, implementing monitoring systems to efficiently deliver warnings is the best tool to avoid disastrous situations and damage.
