Cloud Migration Myths Debunked
The business world has experienced a drastic increase in the number of cloud users. More and more companies are turning to cloud computing for business applications and data storage. As more organizations embrace the benefits of cloud computing, there are still concerns and questions about how safe it is to store data and information in the cloud as opposed to on-premise. A lack of knowledge or experience with this type of technology has resulted in several myths and misconceptions about cloud computing.
Below we explain five common misconceptions about cloud computing technology:
- The cloud is less secure. Research has supported the notion that security risks in the cloud are on par with those experienced with more traditional IT solutions.
- Everything can be moved to the cloud. A lot of business owners will dive in head-first without doing enough research or understanding what it is they want to achieve through cloud migration. Different systems and applications have different cloud migration requirements, so before making the switch, it is important for businesses to assess what they can move to the cloud versus what they should move to the cloud.
- Cloud technology is too new. Contrary to popular belief, the concept of cloud technology and computing has been around for nearly half a century and has continued to evolve, improve and expand into the computing technology we know today. The technology itself hasn’t always been as commonplace like it is now, but the capabilities of cloud technology will only continue to grow in popularity. Security will improve, and software will get faster over time.
- The cloud runs itself. This is both true and not true – information and data from an infrastructure perspective can be automated (i.e. running timely backups) but – depending on the needs of your business – using cloud technology still requires knowledgeable experts to manage and run it properly.
- One size fits all. Every business possesses unique qualities – whether it’s the products/services it sells, its size, employee diversity, etc. Because of this, every business also has different needs. The beauty of cloud technology is its ability to change and incorporate specific features to satisfy the needs of your business as well as the multitude of providers and various options (i.e public cloud vs private cloud vs hybrid cloud solutions) that businesses can choose from.

It’s interesting to me that the security risks with the cloud are actually the same as other IT solutions to storing data. That makes me happy because I’m hoping to move all of our data into the cloud so that it’s easier to manage. Knowing that it’ll not only be easy to manage but secure makes me feel relieved.
