Apple’s Green Renovation Raises the Bar
Apple has been all over the news lately after its introduction of the Apple Watch, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as its new Health app. However, the company is now in the stoplight for another reason; its headquarters.
In Cupertino, California, Apple is underway with its plans to create the greenest headquarters on the planet. The plans include 7,000 trees and underground parking lots.
With 80 percent of its headquarters being landscape, Apple wants to incorporate one of the largest onsite corporate solar energy installations. Once completed, the donut-shaped building will be 2.8 million feet and will have the capability to accommodate over 14,000 employees. This amount of potential employees is five times the number that can fit at Apple’s current headquarters.
This initiative blends in with Apple’s theme of creating and supporting greener alternatives. At the Climate Week NYC, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “We’re building a new headquarters that I think will be the greenest building on the planet. It’ll be a center for innovation, and it’s something clearly our employees want and we want.”
Back in 2012, the company received criticism after The New York Times exposed disreputable labor and environmental practices. As a response, Cook said the company has decided to take action to make the supply chain greener and more sustainable.
