Amazon Continues to Test Prime Air Drones
Announced last December, Amazon is expanding its same-day services to include drone delivery. The drones will be able to deliver packages weighing up to five pounds to customers within 30 minutes of their purchase. Currently, the company is testing out prototypes which can be seen in this video.
“The Prime Air team is already flight testing our 5th and 6th generation aerial vehicles,” Bezos wrote in a letter to shareholders. “We are in the design phase on generations 7 and 8.”
A few kinks the company needs to work on are safety features and noise concerns. One safety concern is that people will shoot down the drones and steal the merchandise. Additionally, people living close to the fulfillment centers will not be too happy about the noisy drones flying overhead 24/7.
In response to Amazon’s announcement, Netflix produced a video poking fun at Amazon’s drones. In the video, Netflix’s fake drones can be seen chasing people, exploding and being overall invasive. The video was posted by a Netflix employee without the permission of the company. Both Amazon and Netflix are neck-in-neck when it comes to streaming services, which explains the jab at Prime Air.
Although the drones are in-the-making, Amazon customers shouldn’t hold their breath for Prime Air, as it isn’t expected to launch for a few more years.
