Is the iPhone 5C a flop?

appleApple continues to churn out record breaking sales, but one model has proved to be a dud: the iPhone 5C. Last year, Apple introduced the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C, which is the first time the company has released two products simultaneously since the original iPhone launch. The 5C model has the same internal makeup as 2012’s iPhone 5, but is bundled in a colorful plastic outer layer. Although it’s still a nice phone, Apple’s sales have shown that the model is a flop.

There is speculation as to why the 5C model isn’t doing well in the market, and it mostly concerns price and features. At just $100 less than the 5S, smartphone users have little incentive to purchase the 5C over the 5S. Additionally, the iPhone 5S has more advanced features than those of the iPhone 5 and 5C. One such feature is the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

The Touch ID fingerprint sensor is a convenient, fast and somewhat futuristic feature created for the 5S. Instead of using a password every time to open their phone,  iPhone users simply touch their finger to the phone’s home button to unlock the phone. Users are also able to add additional fingerprints so other people are allowed access to the phone.

Although current Apple customers tend to choose the 5S over the 5C, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the iPhone 5C is most popular among first-time iPhone buyers.  However, an early report from The Wall Street Journal insinuated that Apple may discontinue the iPhone 5C this year and instead introduce two new products.  It is rumored that Apple is working on two new phone models, one with a smaller screen than the original iPhone and one with a larger screen.
