Boeing Develops a Self-destructing Cell Phone
Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of defense, space and security systems, has developed a new phone for government agencies and defense contractors. The new phone has a unique quality, which is that it will self-destruct if tampered with.
Although the self-destruction process doesn’t involve exciting explosions or smoke, the phone will completely erase its contents and become inoperable if there is any attempt to break open the casing of the device. Boeing is giving only a few details about the phone, but has confirmed that it will be called “Boeing Black.”
According to Boeing’s website, the U.S. defense and securities communities were searching for secure mobile technology with the ability to hold important and sometimes sensitive data without jeopardizing a mission if it is lost or stolen.
The phone will use the Android operating system, and will be able to make calls and encrypt stored data. The phone’s user will also have the ability to switch between government and commercial networks. The design of the Boeing Black slightly resembles a Blackberry, and its Boeing PureSecure embedded security system will significantly reduce the risk of mission compromise due to data loss. This is the first cell phone produced by Boeing, but the company has an established reputation for providing secured communications.
Unfortunately, Boeing is only offering this new gadget for certain customers. Rebecca Yeamans, Boeing’s spokesperson, said, “It’s geared towards defense and security customers. It’s not aimed at the consumer.” So, don’t expect to see it on sale at your local mobile phone store.
The release date hasn’t been announced by Boeing yet, but it is predicted to be out by this summer. The pricing for the new phone is currently unknown.
