10 Essential Telecom Terms You Should Know

Telecommunications are highly important to most businesses. Because of this importance, the field possesses a range of terminology useful for expediting information. If you want to know anything about and telecom solutions, here are 10 essential terms to know.

1. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). In the telecom world, an ATM isn’t a machine you withdraw money from. Instead, the telecom ATM refers to high-speed bandwidth connections. These connections are low-latency and use things like packet-switching and multiplexing to achieve quick speeds.

2. Bandwidth. This is the cornerstone of Internet speed terms. Bandwidth is the “width” of the communication line, often measured in hertz. It’s what determines how fast your upload/download times are on a given day.

3. Communication Service Provider (CSP). This term often refers to a broad range of UC solutions or third parties. These can range anywhere from managing your telecom network to broadcasting television. Most of the time they go by other names such as a “managed service provider.”

4. Cloud. The cloud is a conglomerate of tech. Normally used by individuals or companies, a cloud is a technology that operates under a specific server. If a company is using a cloud, it’s often using the server of a cloud-providing company.

5. Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM). This is a high capacity transmission for data usually found in fiber optic connections. Much higher than traditional WDM, DWDM is capable of sending more light wavelengths through fiber optic, leading to greater speeds.

6. Firewall. A firewall is integral to network security. Either on networks or individual systems, firewalls are security measures used to block specific types of inbound and outbound communications. This keeps a network free from malicious intruders.

7. Hypertext Markup Language(HTML). HTML is the “language” used to create websites. Sites designed with HTML tags are identified by the language and then “instructed” to create information based on those tags.

8. Infrastructure. A company’s infrastructure is its essence and skeleton. In the telecom world specifically, infrastructure refers to the upkeep and tools used to perform daily operations within the tech sector. Encompassing hardware, software, IT staff, and services offered, infrastructure is a critical part of any modern organization.

9. Local Access and Transport Area (LATA). This is a regional area covered by telecom providers. LATA is important to know if your business is setting up in an area that requires telecom services from a specific provider.

10. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Utilizing broadband network data, companies can use their Internet to manage and operate all telecom infrastructure. This allows workers to run chat programs, phone systems, and email all from the same network. Extremely versatile, VoIP is often used over traditional telecom providers.

Aside from these 10 terms, there are hundreds more. But anyone looking to know a thing or two about telecom solutions should know these essential ones inside and out.
